![]() Unfortunately, propaganda is just that: deliberately overpowering hype based on the desired outcome rather than anything even remotely resembling historical accuracy or fidelity. If it is my references to the sources of chanoyu’s origins that strike the reader as being excessively iconoclastic, once again there is nothing I can do: I am not the one who decided to turn chanoyu into the top representative of Japan’s traditional culture during the early 20th century, and neither am I responsible for the fact that it has no direct connection with China. I am sorry if the translations do not please the readership (though precisely why that is so I cannot imagine), but I make a very great effort to insure that they do, in fact, represent the material, while also providing the reader with the minimum background necessary to put them into their proper historical context – because this is where modern chanoyu came from. On account of the difficulty of the language, and the fact that the contents are often contradictory or misleading, Book Seven has largely been ignored in partial translations of the Nampō Roku – for precisely those reasons. Book Seven is an extremely difficult collection of essays to translate because, unlike the earlier six books, these were mostly written by an assortment of anonymous authors, at different points during the near-century between Nambō Sōkei’s death and the point when Tachibana Jitsuzan gained access to the Shū-un-an cache of documents, and they reflect virtually anyone and his brother’s attempt to insinuate their ideas into a collection that was supposed to preserve Rikyū’s actual teachings. I have received no feedback whatsoever, and so I do not know what any of you are thinking. The post that was published this morning took 9 days of work (from early in the morning until 1:30 or 2:30 AM every day), and the next post (which cannot be ready before next Thursday, and even that deadline might be difficult) is much longer (I have laid out the general outline of the post, and it will need more than 40 footnotes – since, in addition to a much longer text, it adds an alternate ending from Shibayama’s toku-shu shahon that takes up about half way through the translation, and then moves things in a completely different direction, which I will translate in an appendix). The number of people who are availing themselves of these translations is increasing month by month, yet the contributions that support this work have been going down just as fast. At this point in time, it is as simple as that. ![]() If I fail to pay my bills, or cannot pay my rent, that will be the end of me, and so the end of this blog. And then I will have to pay March’s rent next Wednesday (and the person who collects my rent decided that he no longer wants to be bothered, stealing several hundred dollars of my money in the process – he destroyed the roof by removing the water tank and then blocking up the drainage hole with rocks so the roof flooded and cracked, and now the landlord is dying so I guess he is getting himself out of the picture before the landlord’s son takes over and questions the damage: since I am the only one living here, the blame will fall on me and I have no way to contact the son or anyone else connected with this mess because the only number I have is the landlord’s cellphone, and they have not been answering it since the go-between informed me that he was absenting himself).
